Second Annual Flaughless 5K set for Sept. 21, at Riverside Park
The First Annual Flaughless 5K race, in honor of Vinton native Dan Flaugh, raised $10,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.
The second annual 5K run/walk takes place Saturday, Sept. 21.
Dan Flaugh, a 2004 graduate of Vinton-Shellsburg, was a SPC E4, Calvary Scout in the United States Army and served his country on the front line as a Re-Con Scout of Bush's Surge on Baghdad, Iraq.
River R.A.T.S. prepared for Saturday clean-up day, Ikes hog roast
The route is scouted, the Sponsors are stacking up, the supplies are ready, the menu is planned, the boats are being tarped, even Mother Nature is giving us her best this weekend!
Join the Cedar River R.A.T.S. this Saturday @ 8:40 AM for their 6th Annual Cedar River clean up. The group will ‘‘set sail’’ from the Mt. Auburn boat ramp @ 9:00 and travel down to the Vinton Bridge Ramp, with a homecooked lunch served along the way.
PEO HG to meet Aug. 12
PEO Chapter HG will meet at the home of Dottie Anthony on Monday, August 12 at 7:30 PM. Pat Beatty will assist and Roxanne Ervin is in charge of the program.
Shellsburg Visioning event to show proposals for future improvements, Aug. 8
Shellsburg is participating in the Iowa Living Roadways “Community Visioning” program during 2013. Community Visioning is a long term planning process aimed at enhancing the town’s transportation components. This includes streets, sidewalks, lighting, signage, streetscape, parks, trails, and accessibility. The program utilizes expertise of Trees Forever, Iowa State University design and research students and a professional landscape architect.
Breast Cancer Survivors to meet Aug. 6
Breast Cancer Survivors will meet Tuesday, August 6 at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and conversation at Windsor Manor in the dining room. Free will donation for the meal. Boomtown to recreate historic Iowa State Fair train wreck display
Eastern Iowans who missed the Iowa State Fair this year will have a second chance to see a piece of the fair’s history recreated at Boomtown in Vinton, Iowa on Saturday, August 24. The festival’s main event will include a Pyrotechnic Trainwreck, an explosive reenactment of the head-on locomotive collisions made famous by “Head-On Joe” Connolly at Iowa State Fairs in the late 1890s and early 1900s.

VPRD Glow Ball Golf Outing set for Aug. 3
The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is once again hosting a Glow Ball Golf Outing this Saturday, August 3rd at the Vinton Country Club. This will be a two person best shot 9-hole event beginning at dark. The cost is $12.00 per person which includes the use of a golf ball and light stick, glow necklace and prizes. Sign in will begin at 8:00 p.
Surf's Up, Friday August 2, at the Pool
The Vinton Community Swimming Pool will be hosting its annual Palace at the Pool movie on Friday, August 2nd.
This year we will be showing the movie "Surf's Up." This animated family comedy follows an up-and-coming young penguin in a unique mockumentary style as he attempts to train for and enter the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship.
